In this episode of The Simple Pin Podcast, I wanted to take time to walk through all the latest Pinterest updates related to AI. There’s been a lot of chatter—some valid concern, some confusion—around AI-generated content, how Pinterest is handling it, and what it means for creators like us. I created this post as a place to level-set, share helpful links, and explain what’s happening behind the scenes. Whether you’re new to Pinterest or a longtime user navigating this new era, I hope this gives you clarity and direction.
Pinterest’s Response to AI
Let’s be honest—AI slop (low-quality, mass-generated content) is frustrating. I hear it from listeners all the time, and yes, Pinterest hears it too. While I don’t speak for Pinterest officially, I do work with their educator team and can confidently say: they care deeply about protecting the pinner experience. That’s why we’re seeing tools like AI-modified content labels, an appeals process for wrongly flagged images, an upcoming “See Fewer AI Pins” option, and the ability to opt out of Pinterest Canvas data training. These are small but meaningful steps toward curating better content on the platform.
Pinterest Terms of Service
One big update that’s raised concern is Pinterest’s revised Terms of Service, especially around how user content can be used to train AI models. This isn’t unique to Pinterest—Meta, for example, has similar language. But I understand the frustration, especially for artists and creators who feel like their original work might be exploited without consent. The good news? You can opt out of having your content used to train Pinterest’s AI. I highly recommend reviewing your settings, especially if you’re a visual creator concerned about how your images are used.
What Pinterest Is Building with AI
Not all AI updates are bad news. In fact, Pinterest shared in their Q1 2025 earnings call that AI is now a core competitive advantage. From better visual search and improved ad performance to personalized shopping features for Gen Z users, they’re leveraging AI to enhance the platform. For advertisers and business users, Pinterest’s AI-powered tools are already showing results—but I caution against diving in blindly. If you’re using Performance+ ads, talk to an expert (like our own team) before launching, because strategy still matters more than automation.
Staying Curious AS It Develops
Look, I get it—change can be overwhelming, especially when it affects your business. But what I’ve learned over 15 years in this industry is that staying curious, informed, and user-focused is the best way forward. AI is evolving fast, and Pinterest is still figuring it out, just like we all are. If you’re worried about the future, know that I’m committed to keeping you informed, supported, and in control of what you can control.
