Which keywords should you be targeting this season? The ones that capture the hottest summer trends on Pinterest of course!
As we head into summer there is a definite shift in what people are searching on Pinterest. Today’s podcast will set you up and get you thinking in the right direction with keywords to use this summer.
As we look to Summer 2021, let’s reflect briefly on where we were last summer. Our world was in a deeper lockdown than we had experienced in the spring. So, during this time last year, there were so many people using Pinterest. User numbers doubled in 2020.
I want you to reflect on that because this year we see Pinterest settling into a more normal place and not adding as many users.
That’s just a heads-up explanation for what we see going into this summer. We are seeing some drop in traffic, especially from those numbers from last year.
That’s not unexpected, right? And it’s not only you! It’s simply because people can get out more in Summer 2021. People can travel again and there’s a lot of freedom this summer that we didn’t have last summer, at least in the States.
But this doesn’t mean that people aren’t still searching on Pinterest. People will always be planning and they turn to Pinterest for inspiration, so I want to give you some keyword ideas that you can use to reach your audience this summer.

Now, on to Summer Keywords!
What Keywords Should I Be Using this Summer on Pinterest?
You might be asking, do keywords REALLY matter?
If you’ve been with us for a while you already know the answer to this question is YES!
But, for the sake of those who are new to Pinterest marketing, here’s a quick review of best practices for keywords.
First, Pinterest is a search and discovery platform, not social media.
The person you are marketing to has a problem and they have come to Pinterest to be inspired and to find great ideas that will solve their problem. To find those solutions they put keywords into the Pinterest search bar and voilá, they are matched up with a ton of pins related to their problem.
Second, keyword placement is important.
If you want to be the solution to their problem, it’s important to use keywords and to put your keywords where it matters most. Where would that be?
- Board names
- Board descriptions
- Pin descriptions (including video and story pin descriptions)
Using keywords wherever you can to match up with the person you know will love your product or content is always smart.
A word of caution though. DO NOT keyword stuff and DO NOT list all your keywords back to back.
Keyword stuffing is taking all the keywords you think will work for a particular pin and stuffing them all into two sentences. This creates a sentence that sounds like a robot talking.
Don’t be a robot. You want your descriptions to sound natural like you’re sending a text to a friend.
You don’t have to start with “Hey there…”, but you can say, ”Here is one of the best handmade gifts I’ve ever given my dad. It’s this perfect, beautiful ________. It would be great for a Father’s Day gift.
It’s a natural, conversational description that targets the gift, it is handmade, and it is for Father’s Day.
Now that you have the basics about keywords, let’s dive into those keywords for some of the major holidays, events, and topics of summer ‘21.
Summer Holidays and Events to Highlight
If you know your product or content will fit into these categories, now is the time to highlight them in your pinning strategy.
- Father’s Day
- Canada Day
- Independence Day
- Summer Olympics
- Back to School (primary, secondary, college)
- Labor Day
- Rosh Hashanah
- Grandparent’s Day
- Halloween (searched early last year)
- Christmas (searched in July last year)
I know this list includes a few surprising categories, but the trend is real!
The Summer Olympics of 2020 have been rescheduled for 2021 so definitely highlight anything related. Halloween and Christmas?? Yep! They were both searched early last year, so don’t miss out on grabbing the attention of early planners this summer.
Let’s look at what’s happening in specific categories for Summer 2021.
DIY and Crafts
Pinners are ready for all the DIY, Art Projects, and Crafts that have a summer focus. Here are a few trending topics to consider:
- Summer Art Projects for Kids
- Garage Organization
- Workshop Organization
- Father’s Day DIY or Activities
- 4th Of July Crafts/Activities
- Canada Day Crafts/Activities
- Crafts for Teens and Toddlers
- Homemade Wedding Gift Ideas
- Back To School Crafts
- DIY Travel Kits
Education and Books (including digital products)
It’s time to think about all of those back-to-school needs.
People are thinking about back-to-school ideas this summer. I can tell you I have high hopes for my kids to go back to school this year!
Pinners will be looking for inspiration for outfits, supplies, and college essentials. Don’t forget those 1st Day of Kindergarten or Preschool ideas. Elementary, Middle School, and High School teachers (and homeschooling parents too) will be planning ahead and looking for printables and classroom organization inspiration.

Finance & Frugal Living
In this space, think about side jobs to make money, how to ask for a raise at work, and how to negotiate salaries.
On the frugal living side, the trending topics are thrift store/DIY clothes, money-saving tips for back to school shopping, travel budgeting tips, and vacation hacks to save money.
Health, Wellness, and Fitness
Essential oils for allergies are a hot topic this time of year. A caution here: please don’t make claims that you can cure all health problems or diseases. This area is tricky and making those claims is a sure way to get yourself marked for spam.
Other trending topics are healthy habits, healthy lunch ideas, healthy school snacks, gym routines or at-home workout routines, healthy living tips, mindfulness activities, meditation, and 5K/10k training schedules (or any other race).
Home and Gardening
I felt like last year was the year of the backyard and I still think that trend continues. Lumber prices are through the roof so alternatives to using lumber for anything backyard could be interesting. Think alternatives for patios, fences, and backyard decks.
Additionally, pinners will be searching for patio designs and patios on a budget, front doors, tiered trays, gardens, homesteading, and canning.
Tips for harvesting fruits and vegetables could be in demand this year as well. People were into gardening last year, so they might continue that interest this year.
Travel
People are traveling again!
This is exciting for those who were hit so hard in this space last year. People are ready to get out there and dream again.
I think staycation ideas will still be huge this year along with U.S. (or your home country) holiday travel ideas. I think people just aren’t super comfortable with overseas travel yet.
Give your audience quick tips! People are searching for your input on the 5 Best Restaurants or 5 Must-See Sights; all the places you can’t miss in a certain location.
People go to Pinterest to plan and they want information on why you love a certain part of the country.
Don’t forget the “What to Take” and “How to Travel or Vacation” ideas. You can inspire travel outfits, travel essentials, short trips, glamping, RVing, and great camping spots.
I think travel will get a boost from last year and I’m excited for all of you in this space.
